MBBcH | FC Neurosurg. SA
Dr Mpumelelo Shongwe is a qualified Neurosurgeon who holds a Bachelor of medicine and
Bachelor of Surgery (MBBcH) qualifications from the Wits University. He is also a fellow of the
college of Neurosurgeons of South Africa (FC Neurosurg. SA) — WITS, where he has lectured medical
students too. He is most proud to have been given an opportunity to impart his knowledge to
aspiring neurosurgeons.
Dr Shongwe gained his experience in Neurosurgery in South Africa, where he rotated between
Baragwanath hospital (CHBAH), Joburg Gen (CMJAH), Helen Joseph and Klerksdorp (North West). He
has been exposed to high patient volumes due to the large population of Gauteng.
Prior to being a Neurosurgeon, he has worked as a general practitioner including maternal care
(normal delivery and caesarean section) in Eswatini.
Dr Shongwe is passionate about Neuro Science, and his love for this field started off early in his career when he saw great patient outcomes which resulted from early neurosurgical interventions. That coupled with the fact that there are not many neurosurgeons in the country further sparked his interest in the field.
His special interests in the field includes Neuro-oncology (which looks into tumours of the brain including pituitary and spine), Neuro-spine (which attends to spinal surgery for trauma,
degenerative, tumours, infections etc.), Paediatric Neurosurgery (which talks to Hydrocephalus,
Spinal dysraphism, tumours, seizures etc.), as well as Neuro-trauma (which attends to traumatic
brain injury, Spinal injury).
This doctor who has also completed multiple cadaveric courses, was part of the presenting panel at the 2021 International spine congress in Cape Town, this was an exclusive conference which amalgamated world-recognized professionals in the field of spine healthcare and spine specialists. Dr Shongwe is excited at the opportunity to assist Emaswati and people living in Eswatini with Neuro interventions.
