Latest News – Ekuphileni Launches Breast Cancer Awareness Month

MBABANE - Ekuphileni Clinic kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Friday, and this year's theme is ‘No one should face breast cancer alone’.

The Chief Medical Officer of the clinic, Adman Shabangu, announced plans to reach out to companies and organisations to promote breast cancer screening, focusing primarily on women due to their higher risk of developing the disease.

Shabangu outlined a schedule for bringing Ekuphileni's services to various organisations, including Old Mutual on October 9, UNESWA October 10, Times of Eswatini October 15 and Eswatini Observer October 16.

Ekuphileni Wellness Officer, Ncamy Kunene, stressed the significance of early breast cancer detection.

She encouraged individuals to visit their nearest healthcare facility for screening. She emphasised the importance of monthly breast self-examination. Kunene said early detection increases the chances of successful treatment, including the use of pills to destroy cancerous lumps.

Kunene also educated the audience about breast cancer screening methods, which include self-examination that consists of regular self-checks for lumps, changes in breast shape or size and nipple discharge.

She further mentioned ultrasound, which uses sound waves to create images of the breast tissue. She pointed out mammogram, which is an X-rays of the breast tissue, typically recommended for women over 40.

Kunene further mentioned breast cancer treatment options such as surgery, which is the removal of the cancerous tumour and surrounding tissue. She also highlighted radiation therapy, which uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells.

By raising awareness and providing accessible screening and treatment options, Ekuphileni Clinic stated that they aim to empower individuals to take control of their breast health and improve outcomes for people affected by breast cancer.
